Mordant Dye
  • 3 Tbsp alum dissolved in boiling water
  • 2 gallons tap water

Pre-wet the fibers. Add to mordant bath. Heat to just below a simmer. Stir frequently for half an hour. Turn off heat. Let fibers set in mordant bath overnight.

  • 1 ounce logwood dust (place in a nylon stocking for easier straining)
  • 12 ounces water

Soak for 8 hours then add water to make 2 gallons.

Add pre-mordanted fibers (and still wet). Allow to soak overnight (10 hours). Heat to below simmer for half an hour. Allow fibers to cool in dye-bath for 4 hours. Remove fibers. Rinse in cool water until water runs clear.
